The Full Story

After formal Piano Tuning /Technician training at both the London College of Furniture (CGLI), and Stevenson College Edinburgh(NTC Dip), Alan's initial job was as assistant Piano Technician at The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. This was a fantastic opportunity for the newly qualified. working in a small team of knowledgeable and dedicated tuner/technicians..

In 1986 Alan was given the chance of being self employed and so York Piano Service was born.

During many years in York Alan worked as Technician responsible for the maintenance of the instruments of many of Yorkshire’s concert venues, National Trust concert series instruments and worked with prominent UK and visiting artists - as well as many hundreds of domestic customers.

In the mid 90s he set off to experience the piano world in Germany....working as 'Klavier Techniker' before returning to his home town in Scotland where he maintained the family piano business... Alan's father was also a professional Piano Tuner/Technician spending his whole working life in the piano trade.

Since moving to Somerset and establishing Milverton Piano Company (pianoservice.co.uk) in the late 90s  he has continued to provide a trustworthy & honest service, having gained a solid reputation in the piano trade and a firm foundation for piano owners in the South West - concert venues, professional musicians and domestic customers alike.

As a full time Tuner/Tech Alan has many hundreds of annual domestic clients where he enjoys meeting with the customers, many of whom have become family friends over the years.

In recent years he decided to close the large and cold Milverton piano workshop to move into smaller premises which are easier to heat ! .....now there's a purpose built workshop at Alan's home in Wellington.
